BOWEN THERAPY
A light-touch therapy that treats the body as a whole and helps bring you back into balance
What Can Bowen Help With?
Although Bowen is a therapy which aims to treat the body as a whole, there are a variety of symptoms and conditions which often respond well to it.
These include:
- Back pain
- Sciatica
- Sports Injuries
- Hamstring Issues
- Knee Pain
- Elbow Pain (inc. Golfer’s / Tennis Elbow)
- Carpal Tunnel Syndrome / RSI
- Shoulder Restriction
- Neck Pain
- Jaw Problems
- Respiratory Conditions
- Hayfever / Sinusitis
- Digestive issues
- Hormone Imbalance
- Headache / Migraine
- Anxiety
- ADHD
- Sleep Issues
- Chronic Fatigue Conditions
Being a treatment that helps to keep the whole body in balance, it can also play a role in sports injury prevention and is therefore becoming increasingly popular with athletes and those who are very active and play sports.

What is Bowen Therapy?
The Bowen Technique is a mostly gentle, hands-on therapy, which uses rolling-type moves over certain muscles and areas of soft tissue. These moves are designed to stimulate a response from the body, encouraging relaxation and rebalancing.
As a light touch treatment, with Bowen, often “less is more” meaning it can be a gentler - while effective - alternative to other deeper or harsher manual therapies, for many issues.
Bowen can often be successful where other therapies and treatments fail, due to the holistic nature of it; rather than focusing on specific issues and areas of pain, Bowen recognises that these often come from other areas of the body, due to it being out of balance. This can be caused by things like previous injuries and postural issues, causing the body to compensate in various ways in order to keep us upright.
Bowen can be performed through light, loose clothing, involves no manipulation or adjustment and generally feels pleasant and relaxing to receive.
What to expect and how to prepare for your first session
If you are coming to me for Bowen for the first time, you will be required to book an Initial Consultation and fill in the form sent to you with your confirmation email, prior to your appointment.
Please wear light, loose clothing to allow all Bowen moves to be performed effectively. Shorts and a vest top are ideal (you will be able to change here), otherwise ensuring what you are wearing is as loose fitting and light as possible will be appreciated.
When you arrive for your appointment, I will begin by asking you some questions about your history, based on the answers on your form, and perform a short assessment of things like posture and range of motion, before beginning the treatment.
Between each set of Bowen moves, there are short breaks to allow some time and space for a response to happen within the body and, during which, you can allow yourself to completely relax.

Each session typically lasts for 45-60 minutes, however, the body may continue to respond to the treatment up to 10 days after it.
Change can often take place within 3 sessions, ideally a week apart.
However, some symptoms or conditions may require further treatments and, in the case of maintenance and injury prevention, regular appointments (e.g. 4-8 weekly) appointments can be beneficial.
